The British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis (BSCAH)
Originally formed by dentists in 1952, the original society, ‘The British Society of Dental Hypnosis’, consisted of dental surgeons who used hypnosis adjunctively in clinical practice. Three years later, they amalgamated with a group of specialist doctors to form ‘The Dental and Medical Society for the Study of Hypnosis’, and, following a re-structuring of the constitution, in 1968, it was re-named ‘The British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis’. Since then, the society has gone through a number of changes. In 1977, for example, a sister society was formed—‘The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis’ (BSCEH) and, although a number of doctors and dentists belonged to both, it allowed psychologists to join in and contribute both to our clinical and theoretical understanding of hypnosis. And, the two societies merged together in 2007 to form ‘The British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis’ (BSCAH), a name which has been retained to the present day.
Unlike the various lay hypnotherapy organisations in the UK, BSCAH only trains health professionals—doctors, dentists, nurses, chartered psychologists and any other clinicians who have a legitimate reason for using hypnotherapy in their work. Counsellors and psychotherapists, who are registered with UKCP or BACP, are eligible on a case by case basis. BSCAH is the only hypnosis organisation of its kind in the UK.
