A person suffering from Kleptomania has a compulsion to steal items which do not belong to them. The objects which they steal can range from the trivial to the expensive. Even though the person may not need the items they seem unable to stop themselves from taking them.
The treatment of Kleptomania involves a combination of hypnotherapy and psychotherapy. The aim of the hypnotherapy is to deter the person from stealing by using an aversion technique, while at the same time the psychotherapy is used to explore and treat the underlying problems. It is an important part of the treatment that the patient explores with the therapist the reasons for their need to steal and addresses these issues in course of the treatment sessions.
